Swimming Lessons


YMCA swim lessons are designed to follow a national curriculum, where youth and adults can develop their swimming skills. Classes begin with children as young as 6 months old. Classes are arranged by skill level so you can pick the class that meets your family's needs.

Swim Lesson Descriptions:
Pre-School (Ages 3-5 yrs):
PIKE (Beginner): No experience required. Teaches
basic paddle stroke, kicking skills, pool safety, proper PFD and IFD use, comfort with holding face in the
water while blowing bubbles and swimming.
EEL (Adv. Beginner): Participant should be comfortable in the water and able to swim 5 ft front and back
without assistance. Teaches kicking, diving, floating and progressive paddle stroke, front, back and side.
RAY/STARFISH (Advanced): Participant should be comfortable with face in water and able to swim 15ft, front and back without assistance. Teaches improved stroke mechanics, treading water, progressive diving skills, underwater swimming skills and endurance.
School Age (Ages 6 and up):
POLLIWOG (Beginner): No experience required. Teaches front, back and side paddle strokes and breath control.
GUPPY (Adv. Beginner): Participant must be comfortable in the water and able to swim 50ft front crawl and back crawl without assistance. Teaches front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary back stroke.
MINNOW (Intermediate): Participant should be able to swim 25yds backstroke, breaststroke, and front crawl, face in the water. Teaches refined strokes learned in Guppy.
FISH,FLYING FISH,SHARK (Advanced ): Participant should be able to swim 50yds backstroke, breaststroke, and front crawl, with rotary breathing. Teaches refined breaststroke, elementary backstroke & introduces butterfly.
Parent-Child (6mo-3yrs):
The primary objective is to get both parent and child comfortable in the water while having fun and learning to be safe in and around water. Class includes games, songs, and toys that encourage basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control.
Adult (15 years & older):
You have waited long enough! Our instructors are committed to meet your swimming needs. We offer advanced and beginner classes to better help you achieve your goals.
Important information:
- All instructors are YMCA certified.
- Weekday classes meet for 8 lessons, Mon-Thur during in the Summer, 2 lessons per week in Fall, Winter and Spring.
- Semi-private lessons offer smaller classes and more individual attention.
- Saturday classes meet one day a week for 4 weeks.
- Fridays are reserved for make-up days. In the event that multiple classes require a make up on Friday, we will schedule a make-up class at the same time but on a different day.
- The pool will close if:
- We see lightening
- Hear thunder
- Rain hinders our visibility of the pool.
- WE WILL HAVE CLASS IN THE RAIN if the pool remains open!
- Classes that meet at least half of their scheduled time will not be made up.
- Make-up classes (or credits) due to conflict or illness are not offered.
Private Swim Lessons:Our Private Lessons are structured to work with the swimmer's individual goal. Whether you want to overcome a fear of the water or to train for a competition, Private Swim Lessons are the way to go.
