YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow, located in Hunt, TX just west of Kerrville on the Guadalupe River, has been serving children since 1927. We serve up to 108 campers per session for five 1 week sessions and one 2 week session. Our children come from many diverse back grounds creating an atmosphere of learning for both the campers and our staff. So come on out to play--you might just learn something new!

Camp is located in Hunt, TX just west of Kerrville on Hwy. 39. CFA is about 1.5 hours from San Antonio and 2 hours from Austin.
CFA Summer Job Descriptions 2007
Summer Camp 2007 is just around the corner! If you're a fun-loving, enthusiastic person who loves working with children and who loves a challenge, we're looking for you! Being on resident camp staff is a one-of-a-kind experience that can never be duplicated. Whether you're a first-time counselor or a long-time CFA’er, we want to hear from you! Camp Counselors—13 guys, 13 gals (Great for Internships!)
The heart and soul of camp, counselors are responsible to the Village Leaders for assigned activities and the health and safety of 8-10 campers for an entire session. He/she, along with a co-counselor, is also responsible for developing a living unit and pride within the group centered around our core values. Counselors will also teach/assist in program areas (see below). Counselors must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate.
All counselors will assist and be trained to lead basic activities at camp. All activity leaders will be cabin counselors. Please indicate your interest in leading any of these activities on your applications and in your interview. (Some activities require certifications (we provide)):
- Arts & Crafts Coordinator-He/she will be directly responsible for planning, teaching, and communicating needs for the arts and crafts program. In addition to our crafts area, he/she is responsible for the safe operation of our Pottery building, equipment, and supplies. He/she will plan and facilitate the Crafts Club (Monday-Friday lessons with a set group of campers).
- Challenge Course Coordinator - He/she will be directly responsible for planning, facilitating, maintaining safety, and communicating needs for the Challenge Course program. Challenge Course facilitator certification is required (course offered the week of May 28-June 2). He/she will plan and facilitate the Carabineer Club (Monday-Friday lessons with a set group of campers).
- Lifeguards-As part of the aquatic team, lifeguards are responsible for safety at aquatic areas including river and pool activities under the supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator. All lifeguards must be certified under the YMCA Lifeguarding Program (Full course offered the week of May 28-June 2, arrangements will be made for current American Red Cross lifeguards to "crossover" to YMCA lifeguarding).
- Raggers Leaders (1 guy, 1 gal)-Responsible to the S.M.B. Director (see below for more info) for creating an inviting, personal atmosphere for campers and staff to participate successfully in the Raggers/Leathers program. He/she will introduce the program, maintain a log of all participants, coordinate Raggers, conduct individual and group discussions, schedule/lead Ragger ceremonies and assist counselors in the Leathers program.
- Camp Photographer—Responsible to the Executive Camp Director for taking photographs of daily camp activities and campers. Computer/Internet skills are necessary. He/she is responsible for posting camp pictures on the Internet for parents and campers to view and creating a session slide show for each closing day. Writing skills are necessary for captions, text, and online newsletter.
- Bulls Eye Club Coordinator-He/she will be directly responsible for planning, teaching, and communicating needs for the target sports program. This includes but is not limited to: archery, riflery (BB guns), horseshoes, and other target related games. He/she will plan and facilitate the Bulls Eye Club (Monday-Friday lessons with a set group of campers). Previous target sports experience preferred.
- Varsity Club Coordinator-He/she will be directly responsible for planning, teaching, and communicating needs for the all-sports program. This includes but is not limited to: kickball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and other sports games. He/she will plan and facilitate the Varsity Club (Monday-Friday lessons with a set group of campers). Passion for and experience in a variety sports is required.
- O.W.L.S. Club Coordinator-He/she will be directly responsible for planning, teaching, and communicating needs for the Outdoor Living and Wellness Program. This includes but is not limited to: hiking, outdoor cooking, back packing, fishing, astronomy, and overnight camping. He/she will plan and facilitate the O.W.L.S. Club (Monday-Friday lessons with a set group of campers). Passion for and experience in a variety sports is required.
- LIT (Leader in Training) Coordinators-(1 guy, 1 gal) The LIT Directors will work together to plan and facilitate a two-week leadership program for 16 year olds. They will work with the LIT's training them to discover their personal leadership style, use their leadership skills in a camp setting, coordinate activities, and work hands-on with younger campers. A strong sense of personal leadership, experience teaching leadership skills, and interest and ability to work with more mature campers is a must. During the 4 weeks of the LIT program (two, 2-week sessions), LIT Coordinators will live with LIT campers in rustic cabins.
- Wrangler (Internship available) Responsible to the Equestrian Director for Equestrian activities and safety. He/she is also responsible for the health and safety of the horses and maintaining equipment under the supervision of Equestrian Director. He/she will be required to assist in all aspects of equestrian program operation including teaching western style riding, leading trail rides for all campers, and ensuring safety of equestrian program participants. Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) certificate is recommended, not required. This person may be required to live with campers and assist with other camp programs and general camp duties. CFA Administrative Staff
These staff members are called upon with specific duties listed below along with many other responsibilities. Directors and Ad-staff work together to create a wholesome, safe and challenging environment for the counselors and campers to thrive in while doing lots of behind the scene preparations setting up activities such as evening programs, daily schedules, opening and closing days and much more. They are counselors, leaders, toilet plungers, dance deejays, prop creators and more. If you want a new challenge, apply today for CFA Ad-Staff.
Assistant Camp Director (seasonal May 15 - August 6, 2007)
Ready to move up in the camping world? Then this is the position for you! Join our leadership team in early MAy to learn the ropes, plan training session and gear up for our Ad-staff training. This person must have resident camp experience and be at least 21 years old. Responsible for providing leadership, direction, motivation and more to all staff. Will talk with parents, help solve camper and staff issues while being able to step into any role in camp. For more information, please call Allison at 800-765-9622.
Village Leaders—1 guy, 1 gal (Great for Internships!)
Responsible to the Summer Camp Director for a particular “unit” which might include up to 13 counselors, CIT’s (Counselors in Training) and up to 60 campers. The Village Leader is an organizer, supervisor, program developer, evaluator and coordinator. He/she assists the director in planning and implementing camp programs, supervising counselors within the unit, and is responsible for their morale and effectiveness. He/she is also responsible to resolve camper problems that become too complicated or difficult for counselors. Persons seeking this position should be 20 or older, have camping experience as well as be able to multi-task. This is a great leadership development field work experience!
Activity Coordinator
Responsible to the Program Director for all activities that occur during sessions. This person is key in making sure that CFA Club leaders are prepared, have their needed supplies and effectively carry out lesson plans. He/She will also help prepare, organize and facilitate evening program and special events. This is a great leadership development field work experience!
Behavior Specialist
Responsible to the Summer Camp Director for assisting in maintenance of an emotionally and physically safe camp environment. This person primarily assists counselors with camper behavioral issues. He/She should have vested interest in child psychology and some college credit in Psychology/Sociology is required. Assisting with other program planning, facilitating, assisting, and/or set-up should be expected. This person may live with campers if the need arises. A minimum age of 20 and previous camp experience is preferred.
S.M.B. (Spirit Mind Body) Leader
Responsible to the Summer Camp Director for the healthy development and maintenance of staff's spiritual, mental, and physical well-being. This person will coordinate time-off events, morale building/maintenance, gathering and distributing tips for staff's individual development, and more. He/She will also be responsible for supervising the Raggers leaders and program. Assisting with other program planning, facilitating, assisting, and/or set-up should be expected. This person may live with campers if the need arises. A minimum age of 20 and previous camp experience is preferred.
Aquatics Coordinator
Responsible to the Summer Camp Director for all aquatic safety regulations and activities. This administrator must be 21 years old or older and hold current certifications in Life Guarding, CPR and First Aid. He/She will coordinate and supervise all activities that take place in the Guadalupe River and in the camp swimming pool. He/she will plan and facilitate the River Rats Club (Monday-Friday lessons with a set group of campers). He/She will also supervise and conduct continuing education, in-services, and audits of all camp lifeguards. It is recommended that this person have open water (river) and pool supervisory experience. This person may live with campers if the need arises.
Clinic Specialist/Camp Nurse
Responsible to the Summer Camp Director for health and safety of all persons in camp. He/she will work with the Summer Camp Director in setting up the clinic, training staff in daily observances in health and first aid, and handle all medications given to campers and staff. The Nurse will maintain daily medications/First Aid records and will complete forms required by insurance companies and health departments. The clinic specialist must be a Registered Nurse, should be at least 21, able to adapt to outdoor living and is desired he/she participate in camp activities. Camp age children welcome as long as they do not interfere with the Clinic Specialist duties or disrupt everyday camp life. Details arranged on an individual basis.
Facility Staff
House Keeper (June 1-August 5)
This person responsible to the Facility Manager for the cleanliness and upkeep of camp facilities. Primary duties include cleaning the dining hall, gymnasium, restrooms, and offices. Part-time position for summer camp only. Please apply to Joseph Daniel, Facility Manager, 1-800-765-9622 or email.
