Badge Information for Spring 2008
We recommend that you complete the homework assignments at your next month's troop meeting, at least 1 month prior to your camp date. If you need help or ideas, please contact us at camp. Another recommendation is for you, the troop leader, to look through the manual and see if there are additional activities or parts of badges that your girls could earn while in camp. What a perfect time to use the camp environment for nature hunts, hiking, campouts, etc.

Please bring your Girl Scout Manuals/Handbooks with you to camp.

Full Weekend Stay - Two Badges Earned!

Brownies

  • Space Explorer pg 138 Please see page 138 in your Try-Its manual, Activity 2: The Moon. Why does the moon look like it changes shape? One week it is full. The next time you see a half-moon. The moonlight you is the sun shining on one side of the moon. As the earth and moon move around the sun, you see the moon in different places. You also see the parts of the moon that get sunlight. Draw the moon on the same day of the week for four weeks. What did you see? Excerpt taken from the "Try Its" for Brownie Girl Scouts, page 138. Copyright 2000 Girl Scouts of the USA.

Troop Leaders, please note that we will host the discussion part of the activity, but you can also do this in your group meeting. Or, you can simply have the girls create their Moon Phase worksheet or use the example attached. To get the girls more involved, do not copy and handout the sheet, but rather have them create their own out of construction paper, markers, tape. ribbon, etc. Be creative and have fun! We will collect these at camp. Moon Phase Worksheet

  • Water Everywhere pg 142-There is no pre-work for this badge. However, you can have the girls begin to save food labels and bring them with them to camp. The girls will be getting into the water (walking), so rain boots or shoes that can get wet are suggested.

Juniors

  • Your Outdoor Surroundings pg 126 Have the girls begin to research the best fabrics and products for different types of weather conditions. As a troop or individually, create a collage of your findings and be ready to present this at camp.
  • Horse Rider pg 107 Begin to familiarize the girls on tack, equipment, styles of saddles, bridles, and bits. We ask that each girl select a different piece of equipment and then does research to learn all about it, what it is for, how it is used, creates a collage or draws a picture of it and is ready to give a short presentation during the Horse Rider Session. Equipment Slips (for troop leader)

Cadettes

  • Horse Sense, pg 160 Each girl needs to research one breed of horse, draw it, know its history, and identify its characteristics. Career Exploration 1: As a troop, research 2 careers related to horses and explore them. Find out about the training required, salaries, job market, etc. To what professional organizations do members of each field belong? Be ready to give a presentation at camp. Laura, our equestrian director, will teach you about a 3rd equestrian profession!
  • Paddle, Pole, and Roll pg 170 Service Project 1 - Have the girls work in pairs to complete this project. They need to search for river trips as well as a list of outfitters utilizing online resources, at your local library or through magazines. Each pair should come to camp ready to present their findings on at least 2 different trips. Additionally, they need to know what it takes to get a waterfront / boating instructor job for the Girl Scouts - some of this information can be found in Safety Wise and from the Girl Scout Council.

One Night Stay Only - See Above for pre-camp work

  • Friday Night Arrival is between 5 pm and 7:30 pm. The troop leader will attend the 8pm meeting. Departure Time is anytime after 5 pm Saturday-please note that Sat dinner is included in fee.
  • Saturday Arrival is between 9 am and 11 am. The troop leader will attend the 11:30 am meeting. Departure time is by noon on Sunday.
