YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow

Traditional Summer Resident Camp
(8-15 years old)

Camp Life

From the moment campers arrive, they are welcomed, appreciated and cherished. Traditional camp is for children and teens ages 8 to 15.  Campers are divided into cabin groups, based on gender and birth date. Each cabin group has two counselors, and younger cabins will often have a C.I.T. (17-year-old counselor in training) serving as a third helper that is learning the ropes.  For meals, campers are divided into table groups.  Table groups are mixed gender, but roughly all the same age. This allows campers to meet new staff and other campers. We feel it is important for development for campers to break out of the same group and meet new people. In all of our programming, we work hard to stay focused on our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and Faith.

The Experience

Each morning after breakfast, campers attend their chosen club for 1.5 hours.  Clubs are a time for more in-depth learning and skill-building.  Throughout the rest of the day, campers ages 8 to 11 (called Pioneers) are scheduled with their cabin to rotate through all of CFA's activities, allowing them to experience a wide variety of new things with their cabinmates and friends. Our 12 to 15 year old campers (called Teens) choose their own activities individually, through a morning sign-up process. This allows our older campers to emphasize their favorites or try a wide variety of activities, while gaining a sense of independence.  Each afternoon, all campers attend "free swim" at our pool.  During this time, they can choose to swim, lounge in the shallow "beach" entry, or hang out with friends playing board or card games under our shaded patio.  After dinner, we round out the day at PowWow (camper-powered chapel,) a fun all-camp activity or game, and Embers (cabin closing or devotional.)

It is our goal to help your child grow in self confidence and to learn new things at camp, all while playing and having a great time.  We encourage all potential camp families to come out for a tour. Call us or send us and email with your concerns and/or questions, so that we can better help you understand CFA and find the right fit for your camper(s.)
