OUR CFA Leadership Team
Wendy loves camp! She started going to camp at the age of 11 and has not missed a summer yet. That makes over 30 years of camp! A Michigan native, she has also spent time working and volunteering at camps in Indiana and most recently Wisconsin. Her favorite things about camp are the feeling of community and belonging, giving campers and staff a place to shine, and CAMPFIRES!
Wendy married her husband Fred 15 years ago beside Blackman Lake at YMCA Camp Potawotami (in Indiana.) They have two amazing kids— Wesley (age 13) and Rebecca (age 10) who are also huge fans of camp. The whole family is beyond excited to be a part of CFA. In her free time Wendy enjoys reading, hiking, spending time with her family, teaching children’s Bible Classes at church and watching ice hockey.. GO RED WINGS!
Ashley’s life is all about camp.. literally. She grew up just down the road from CFA at another summer camp! Ashley went to high school in Ingram and went on to attend college at Texas Tech University. Ashley was a camper for ten years and a counselor for over three. She truly has a passion for camp and what it’s all about. She believes camp is about changing lives, making memories and being the person the Lord intended you to be— yourself! Growing up at a camp, she called it the “camp bubble.”
After graduating college with a degree in Psychology, she married her high school sweetheart, Nathan, in 2006. After living in Tucson Arizona, Houston and Austin, it was time to get back “home”. In October 2013, her husband was offered a job at her family camp as the boys director! Ashley has always felt like the Texas Hill Country is their home and could not be more excited to be back and working in the camp world. Ashley and her husband have two children, Blake and Caroline, and they are already loving life here in the heart of the Hill Country.
SUMMER CAMP DIRECTOR
Julia was born in California but grew up in San Antonio. She has been spending her summer at camps since she was four, but wasn’t a camper at CFA until she was twelve. Her twin sister was nominated for a leadership summer camp, so Julia decided to pick a different camp with different interests. Since then she has spent every summer at CFA. She was a camper for four years then transitioned through the leadership program into being a counselor. She spent every summer of her college career working at camp, where she was a camp counselor for two years, Pioneer Village Coordinator for one, then Assistant Director for two more. After she graduated from the McCombs Schools of Business at the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Finance and a minor in Management Information Systems she accepted a full time job at Camp Flaming Arrow. She will continue to take an active role in residential camp as well as run day camp. She is excited to live at camp, the best place in the world, full-time and to continue impacting the summer experience for campers and staff alike.
Equestrian & retreats director
Julie was born and grew up in the Houston area where she also started her life being around horses. Although not born into a "horsey" family, she found ways through the years to stick with her horse craziness that lots of girls can get at a young age. Julie knew she wanted to keep her love for horses in her life, so attended Sul Ross State University in the far corner of west Texas to get her degree in Animal Science. There she met a special friend that introduced her into the camp world and thus found her way to her first camp career position as Equestrian Director 2012-2014 at YMCA Camp Cullen in Trinity, TX. Later after relocating with her husband, Travis, back to the Texas Hill Country she stuck to her love for camp by signing up as a weekend retreat counselor and wrangler for YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow. As things evolved, she knew she wanted to go pro again and moved back into a professional role at CFA in early 2015. Julie's favorite thing to do at camp besides caring for the horse herd is taking the time to help a child overcome any fear they have about riding a horse at camp. She really enjoys seeing the progress and improvements a child can make even during their short time spent during a weekend retreat. That's what makes her enjoy her retreat weekends and being our Equestrian and Retreats Director at CFA.
Cassie grew up in the Great Lakes State. She has been going to camp for as long as she can remember, wether it was a day camp in the form of Vacation Bible School or like now working at camp. CFA is the forth camp she has worked for. She worked for Living Water Ministries through the two camps it had for 5 summers, an at no cost camp for children who can't afford camp called Pretty Lake Vacation Camp for 1 summer, and a different YMCA Camp for 2 years. She attended Central Michigan University where she got her Bachelors in Recreation, Parks and Leisure. Fun fact about her is is she lived on an uninhabited island for a week.
Mallory grew up in Maryland riding and working with horses. She has competed in hunter, jumper, dressage and games competitions. She has given advanced beginner/beginning intermediate riding lessons privately and with a lesson barn, and worked with children with developmental disabilities through a therapeutic riding program. She also has worked with many young and green horses and ponies and enjoys creating bonds with them and overcoming the challenges they pose. Mallory moved to TX from the Outer Banks of North Carolina where she managed a kite shop for an action adventure company. While in the OBX she learned to hang glide, surf and fly sport and power kites. Here in Texas, she enjoys playing Roller Derby with Kerr County Roller Derby.
