Centrally located on the city’s south side, the Y Living Center is uniquely poised to play an essential role in the implementation of community-based chronic illness intervention programs for an at-risk community. Using a new and innovative approach that focuses on the premise of holistic balance — spirit, mind and body — the programs offered at the center provide wellness education, promote physical activity, encourage implementation skills, and create a culture for support and success. The Y is committed to eliminating barriers that hinder families from reaching their wellness potential and goals and ensures that no one is turned away due to their current financial situation.

Y Living Center Programs

YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program

1 out of 3 US Adults has Pre-Diabetes

The Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 Diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. Participants will work together in a small group to learn about healthier eating and increasing their physical activity to reduce their risk of developing diabetes. 

  • 1 year (16 weekly, 3 bi-weekly, 6 monthly) for 1 hour per session
  • Small group discussion facilitated by a YMCA Certified Lifestyle Coach
  • Topics cover Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Mental Aspect of Change
  • Adults must be diagnosed prediabetic or qualify through the “What is your risk score?” assessment.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program.

What is prediabetes?

What is Prediabetes?
Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating and increased physical activity.

IF YOU SCORED A 9 OR HIGHER, then you may be at risk for prediabetes or diabetes and may qualify for the program. This does NOT mean you have diabetes. You will need a blood test to confirm if you have diabetes.


Diabetes Self-Management

Self Management



This program, offered by Metro Health, provides support for individuals to take control of their health. Workshops are open to adults with diabetes and their family members or caregivers.

Y Living Program

YLiving GraduatesThe Y Living Program empowers adults and families to obtain total health through enriching the spirit, mind, and body. Participants will learn techniques to prevent or manage chronic illnesses that result from obesity and sedentary lifestyle. 

The YMCA is continuously accepting "Y Living Interest Forms" for future sessions.  The Y Living Program meets twice a week for 2 hours, which includes an hour of education and an hour of physical activity. Participants will earn a FREE 3-month membership and other incentives during the program while they are ACTIVE in the program. Interest forms can be turned at the YMCA. We will be offering sessions throughout the year in different areas of the city.

Healthy Weight & Your Child

Healthy Weight & Your Child is a lifestyle change intervention to address childhood obesity for children ages 7-13 and their families. This program focuses on healthy eating, regular physical activity, and behavior change to empower children to live a healthier and active lifestyle.

Veggies 
  • 10 weeks that meet twice a week followed by 5 weekly sessions

  • 2 hours per session (1-hour group discussion, 30 minutes when youth participate in physical activity and adults continue the group discussion, & 30 minutes of adult & youth physical activity)

  • Topics Include: Goal Setting, Food Groups, Internal Triggers, Staying Healthy & Motivated, and Banishing Bullying

  • To qualify for HW&YC: children must have a body mass index in the 95th percentile or higher, and be cleared by a medical provider.

Health Matters™

In partnership with The ARC of San Antonio, Health Matters™ is a program designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their caregivers who want to become better informed about their own health, nutrition, and fitness.

Child Exercising

  • 1.5 hours per session (45 minutes of education & 45 minutes of physical activity)

Enhance® Fitness

Enhanced FitnessEnhance® Fitness is a proven community-based senior fitness and arthritis management program. Its purpose is to help older adults become more active, energized and empowered for independent living.

    • 16 weeks that meet 3 times per week
    • 1 hour of FUN & FITNESS including a warm-up, strength training, cardio and balance exercise
    • Class of up to 25 participants at any level of fitness
    • Benefits include: improved balance, increase strength and improved flexibility and range of motion.

Livestrong at the Y

Livestrong ProgramIs about saying ‘goodbye’ to being a patient and ‘hello’ to being a healthy, whole person again. Livestrong® at the Y provides a supportive and caring environment that allows adult cancer survivors the opportunity to come to the Y to heal.

    • 12-week YMCA-funded program that meets twice a week
    • Individualized training and physical activity development sessions
    • Social engagement activities
    • Educational Seminars & Guest Speakers
    • Benefits include: reducing the severity of treatment side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, improving energy levels

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring

Woman taking blood pressure The purpose of the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program is to assist adults diagnosed with hypertension to lower their systolic and diastolic blood pressure through the simple process of checking and recording their blood pressure at least twice a month over a four-month period. Participants in this program will work with a Healthy Heart Ambassador to:


  • Self-measure their blood pressure at least twice a month
  • Attend two personalized consultations per month
  • Attend monthly nutrition education seminars
  • The Y will provide options for participants who need a home blood pressure monitor.

CHEF (Culinary Health Education for Families)

CHEF
CHEF is about inspiring health and wellness through the preparation and enjoyment of food. Participants will develop basic cooking skills as part of a healthy lifestyle through hands-on learning experiences.

    • Classes for kids and families
    • Promotes healthier choices while celebrating wholesome and delicious flavors
    • Hands-on cooking can help increase nutrition literacy
    • 60-90 minute classes duration varies

Y Living Center Group Exercise

GroupEx is a great way to get your heart pumping and a full body workout. Classes are scheduled at select times of the day. Classes are available for the beginner to advanced. FEE Based Classes. Must sign up for membership at the Y Living Center.
