Centrally located on the city’s south side, the Y Living Center is uniquely poised to play an essential role in the implementation of community-based chronic illness intervention programs for an at-risk community. Using a new and innovative approach that focuses on the premise of holistic balance — spirit, mind and body — the programs offered at the center provide wellness education, promote physical activity, encourage implementation skills, and create a culture for support and success. The Y is committed to eliminating barriers that hinder families from reaching their wellness potential and goals and ensures that no one is turned away due to their current financial situation.

Y Living Center Programs


 

Y Living Program

A collaboration with UT Health Science Center’s Institute for Health Promotion Research (UTHSC-IHPR), the Y Living Program is a 12-week holistic healthy living program targeting obesity. This family-based program empowers the family to obtain total wellness through enriching the Spirit, Mind and Body. Families learn techniques to reduce and prevent chronic illness that results from obesity and sedentary lifestyles through educational seminars and physical activity.

The YMCA is currently accepting "Y Living Interest Forms" for the summer 2013 sessions of the Y Living Program. Application deadlines are due one week prior to start of programs. The Y Living Program meets twice a week for 2 hours, which includes an hour of education and an hour of physical activity. Participants will receive a FREE 6-month family membership and other incentives during the program. Interest forms are due to the YMCA by Tuesday, June 4th. Download interest form.

Salsa, Sabor y Salud

An 8-week interactive, bilingual course developed by the National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI) and Kraft Foods to raise awareness among Hispanic/Latino families on the importance of good nutrition and increased levels of physical activity, and to encourage healthy lifestyle habits for families. Families participate in sessions that reinforce the importance of achieving “energy balance” through healthier food choices and increased levels of physical activity. This program is part of First Lady Michelle Obama's “Let's Move” initiative. Free program upon an 8 week commitment. For more information on how to apply for this program call 210-924-8858.

Y Summer Youth Express

Also part of First Lady Michelle Obama's “Let's Move” initiative, and as a participant in the in the Texas Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, the Y Summer Youth Express program provides youth with free USDA-regulated lunches during the summer, as well as opportunities to engage in daily Fit Kids activities, and the "Get a Clue" Summer Library Program. Participants will be coached on the importance of lifelong wellness for Spirit, Mind, and Body. Check back in the summer of 2013

Y Preschool Wellness

Provides children with structured activities and lessons to encourage and foster a healthy lifestyle at an early age. Provides free play time that is carefully planned to create opportunities for children to acquire and fine-tune basic locomotors and motor skills.

LIVESTRONG at the Y

A 12-week, small-group program designed for adult cancer survivors and offered in collaboration with the Lance Armstrong Foundation and other cancer support groups and organizations.  By supporting the work of medical facilities in a community setting, this program meets the needs of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing treatment and improving physical and emotional strength to return to their normal life or to their “new normal.” For more information on how to apply for this program call 210-924-8858.

Y Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP)

Based on effective efforts researched by the National Institutes of Health, this 12-month group-based nutrition and fitness program is designed for individuals at high-risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Adults participate in a 16 core-session program with 12-15 participants and their families. The goal is to reduce and maintain individual weight loss through regular physical activity and a diet low in fat and calories. Set to start September 2013.

Y Living Campaign

An educational campaign that provides materials and presentations on the awareness and importance of nutrition, physical activity, and cancer prevention. Strategies include YLiving4Health, a text messaging campaign, newsletters, mobile mammograms, and health chats.

Group Exercise (Group Ex)

GroupEx is great way to get your heart pumping and a full body workout. Classes are scheduled at select times of the day. Classes are available for the beginner to advanced.

Adult   -
 Individuals 18-61 years        $20 per month

Family I   - Either two adults in the same household OR one adult and children under 18 in household.
$25 per month

Family II - 
Two adults and children under 18 in household -  $30 per moth
