150th Anniversary

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The YMCA of Greater San Antonio officially launched its 150th anniversary celebration today with a press event at the Thousand Oaks Family YMCA,  marking the beginning of a year-long milestone honoring its legacy of strengthening  community and uniting generations.

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai presented an official County Proclamation recognizing the YMCA’s 150 years of service and impact across San Antonio.

“The impact of the YMCA reaches far beyond the walls of each center — touching lives and strengthening the fabric of our society,” said Judge Sakai. “As we embark on your 151st year, there is so much that we can look forward to — fresh initiatives, new  partnerships, and an ever-growing network of support.” He added, “It’s fun to end at the Y-M-C-A.”

San Antonio District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears joined YMCA leadership and community members in commemorating the milestone.

“I want to offer a heartfelt congratulations. This is more than longevity; it is a true legacy. It represents generations of families who have walked through these doors,” said Councilwoman Spears. “When we talk about building safer neighborhoods, supporting working families, and promoting wellness, the YMCA is already doing that  work on the ground.”

The event featured testimonials from YMCA members highlighting the organization’s personal and generational impact.

“As a mom of four, finding a place where everyone belongs feels like winning the lottery,” said YMCA member Julie Hernandez. “The YMCA didn’t just give my son a team — it gave me a chance to grow, too. This place brings us closer.”

YMCA member Patricia Byrd added, “I love the Y. It has helped me in so many ways —as a person, as a community leader, and as someone who wants to do better for the community.”

YMCA President and CEO Louis Lopez said the anniversary reflects both the organization’s legacy and its continued commitment to the future.

“For 150 years, the YMCA has been a place where generations come together to grow, connect, and thrive,” said Lopez. “As we celebrate this milestone, we’re inviting the entire community to be part of shaping the next chapter.”

YMCA leadership also previewed anniversary initiatives planned throughout 2026, including community celebrations, service opportunities, youth engagement, storytelling activations, and a signature 150th Celebration event scheduled for September 26, 2026.
