SAN ANTONIO, TX (March 28, 2026) — The YMCA of Greater San Antonio today celebrated the unveiling of new synthetic turf fields and the official dedication of the Youth Sports Complex at the Mays Family YMCA at Stone Oak, marking a major investment in youth development, community access, and environmental sustainability.
The transformation—made possible through a generous gift from the Ward Family and a
strategic partnership with the San Antonio Water System—replaces seven acres of
grass with approximately 193,000 square feet of synthetic turf, enhancing playability
while significantly reducing water usage.
“Today is about legacy. It’s about partnership; Sustainability; and most importantly,
it’s about our youth,” said Louis Lopez, President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater San
Antonio. “These fields represent spaces where kids grow in confidence, build character,
and learn what it means to be part of a team. These fields belong to them.”
The upgraded complex will allow for more consistent play, fewer weather-related
cancellations, and expanded opportunities for youth sports programming across the
region.
A key component of the project is its environmental impact. Through the removal of
traditional irrigation systems and the installation of turf, the YMCA and SAWS
partnership will result in an estimated 4 million gallons of water savings annually,
reinforcing a shared commitment to sustainability and responsible resource
management.
“This is what happens when philanthropy and public partnership align around a shared
vision,” Lopez added.
Gavino Ramos from San Antonio Water System highlighted the project as a model for
water conservation innovation and long-term community benefit, made possible in part
through SAWS’ Commercial Custom Rebate Program.
The event also honored the legacy of the Ward Family, whose longstanding support of
the YMCA made the transformation possible. During the ceremony, the YMCA presented
the family with commemorative jerseys, symbolizing their enduring impact on youth
and community in San Antonio.
“As we celebrate this milestone during our 150th Anniversary year, we are reminded
that our strength comes from partnerships like these,” said Lopez.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting led by Greg Kelly of the Greater San
Antonio Chamber of Commerce and a celebratory “first goal” by youth participants—
officially opening the fields for play.
The new turf complex is part of the YMCA’s broader commitment to strengthening
communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility,
ensuring that future generations have access to safe, high-quality spaces to learn,
grow, and thrive.
Guests were invited to stay following the ceremony for a youth soccer clinic and
community celebration.
